William Peter Gordon Burges, of Barkham, Wokingham, passed away at his home on Sunday evening, 11 August, aged 86. He never really recovered from the loss of his soulmate and wife, Hazel, who died during the summer of 2022. While his deteriorating health accelerated in recent weeks, Gordon spent important time with his devoted family: his three sons – Peter, John and Guy – their wives and his grandchildren.
Gordon loved gardening, and one of his last acts had been to cast his eye over his garden in its glorious summer bloom. In the 1970s Gordon and Hazel moved with their young family from London to the relatively leafy and quiet town of Wokingham.
His career was spent in the audio-visual sector, and in the 1990s Gordon launched his own company promoting business presentation devices, including what was then a cutting-edge new technology – video conferencing. He was enthusiastic about his local community and for a time after retiring worked on the Barkham Parish Council. He also regularly attended his Christian Science Church in Reading. During his university years Gordon rowed for Cambridge. For National Service he was posted to Cyprus with the Glosters. And as newly-weds in 1962 Gordon and Hazel lived for a while in Switzerland.
A service and celebration of his life will take place in the Braccan Chapel at Easthampstead Park Crematorium, Nine Mile Ride, Bracknell, RG40 3DW on Monday September 2nd at 3:30pm.
