New Reading FC manager Leam Richardson kicked off his time as Royals manager with a humiliating home loss against non league Carlisle United.
The Royals were 2-0 up and cruising after 90 minutes but conceded in the 92nd minute and then again in the 98th minute as the visitors took the game to extra time.
Carlisle then completed their remarkable comeback in extra-time as Regan Linney sealed his hat-trick to dump the Royals out in the first-round.
Reading fans were understandably frustrated at full-time with some sections of the crowd audibly booing at the final whistle.
Supporters also took to social media to voice their anger after being defeat by the National League side.
One fan said: “A new low, even for you. I hope that’s the last game we see half of those bottle jobs having the privilege of wearing the shirt.”
Another commented on the low attendance and said: “Talking about fans not coming through and you put that performance on for us, absolutely embarrassing.”
Another fan said: “Wow how have we thrown that away? I hope Leam Richardson tears them a new one. These players are poor. Shocking.”
Another added: “That’s totally on the players and they should be ashamed of themselves. Disgraceful performance – can’t blame a manager after 3 days.”
Meanwhile, one fan did manage to find some positive in the first performance under Richardson’s management despite the late collapse and said: “It looked like an improvement on the boring football that we were used to. It’s early days but some players look re-vitalised. Then we colapsed at the end. A poor effort at trying to save the shot allowed them to take it in to extra-time. A bad start for Leam. Lots of work to do.”
Another user on X said: “Richardson has been failed and let down by the players, absolutely abysmal and a clear lack of effort once we went 2-0 up.”
