MEMBERS of a borough film club will hear the true story of a couple who chose an unusual location for their idyllic life.
In The Zone of Interest, the commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his wife Hedwig, strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to a concentration camp.
Having worked hard and followed all the rules, the family feel entitled to their comfort and privileges.
Their garden is filled with flowers, and the children play with pets or splash in their pool, while next door, in Auschwitz the Nazis are killing more than a million people.
While not explicitly depicting the horrors over the wall, the film instead relies on the power of suggestion, with brief glimpses of crematoria chimneys and occasional audible clues.
It’s a stark picture of human capacity not only for evil, but for denial.
Jonathan Glazer, Writer and Director of The Zone of Interest, says that natural lighting and filming style give the movie a locked-in present tense that allows the audience to be a fly on the wall.
This is a film not about the past, but about now, and the capacity for violence we all have.
The Zone of Interest can be seen at The Whitty Theatre, Luckley Road, on Thursday, November 21.
Doors open at 6.45pm, with the film starting at 7.30pm.
Tickets cost £4 for members, and £6.50 for non-members.
