A PACK of Wokingham Beavers has made a very special multi-generational connection this year, quite by accident.
Answering a call in April for stall holders at a borough care home fete, they were delighted to come across their Beaver pack founder Mike Bowyers, now living at Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh Care Home, Sindlesham
The 4th Wokingham Beavers had been unaware of the very special connection about to be made there, and were astonished to discover Mike, who had started their group in 1954.
Having made the connection, the Beavers returned to the care home this December, not with a stall this time, but to perform a special thank you concert for Mike, in recognition of all that he has done for their Scouting group over the years.
It was an evening of festive cheer and touching moments,” said Scout leader Jan. There were songs and jokes; the biggest laughs being raised by: ‘What do you call an old snowman? – A puddle,’and: “Why was the snowman looking through the carrots? – He wanted to pick his nose.’”
The Beavers also managed to make their leaders laugh during the care home concert, especially when one innocently asked their Beaver leader: ‘Do you live here?’
Residents thoroughly enjoyed the concert, and commented on what a lovely event it had been.
“One resident was very emotional afterwards and cried because the visit brought back happy memories,” said Jan.
“Then Mike spoke briefly about starting the 4th Wokingham Scouts.
“He couldn’t believe the Beavers had put together a concert specially for him.”
Residents joined in with the singing, laughed at the jokes, and listened to a story.
“And one lady even sang her own song at the end, which everyone joined in with,” said Jan.
“It was a visit that highlighted a very special multi-generational connection between the care home and the 4th Wokingham Scout Group.”
The Beavers have been invited back to the care home in the warmer months for another visit and to enjoy some yet to be decided shared activities.
The group meets at The Cornerstone, Norreys, on Tuesday evenings.
