Wokingham resident Stan Hetherington has set off on an inspiring challenge to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.
Standing at 19,341 feet, Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest peak, and Stan is taking it on to raise money for Headway Thames Valley, a charity that supported his daughter Faye after she sustained a brain injury more than a decade ago.
Stan is well known across the borough for his decades of community work.
He founded Wokingham Music Club in 2012 to bring live music to the town and has played a major part in shaping local events, including helping to create and develop Wokingham Festival.
He has also been heavily involved in organising the Wokingham Winter Carnival, where he began as a volunteer before becoming chair.
This will not be Stan’s first time tackling the mountain. He first climbed it to celebrate his 50th birthday and returned again in 2010, each time raising funds for causes close to his heart.
“Over 11 years ago my daughter Faye fell and tripped whilst she was out running, leaving her with an acquired brain injury,” Stan said.
“Headway Thames Valley was there for us. Without their support, especially the occupational therapist Bob, our journey would not have been as smooth.”
Stan hopes his effort will help more families access vital brain injury support.
