Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey was at Wokingham Family Golf on Saturday for another of his famous photo stunts.
Sir Ed was joined by Clive Jones, the Lib Dem candidate for Wokingham, along with a group of local councillors and supporters.
He arrived on ‘Yellowhammer One’, the nickname of his party’s election bus, and was joined by journalists and film crews from the Press Association, BBC, ITV and Sky News.
He played several of the prehistoric-themed holes with Clive and Wokingham town councillor Alexandra Dominique at the crazy golf course before chatting to the local Lib Dem team.
Dean Wright, operations manager at Wokingham Family Golf, was pleased with the visit, and the associated media coverage.
He told Wokingham Today: “I found out he was coming a few days before,
“We have tried to support the event, and it’s certainly been an interesting experience to have national media here in Wokingham.”
After leaving the golf course, Sir Ed, Clive and their entourage visited the West Oak care home in Murray Road.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, had asked all party leaders to take time out from their campaigning to volunteer to coincide with the Big Help Out initiative.
Sir Ed attended the home to meet and chat with residents, and to learn about the valuable work being done by six-year-old dog Fraser. Among those he met were 95-year-old Vera, her daughter Linda, 81-year-ol Gerald and his wife Julie.
Fraser is owned by Cllr David Hare, Wokingham Borough Council’s Liberal Democrat executive member for social care.
Fraser is a sprocker, which is a cross between a springer and a working cocker.
Together, they are regular visitors to the care home, providing welcome pet therapy to the residents, all of whom look forward to seeing their four-legged friend.
Sir Ed spoke to a group of residents about what Fraser’s visits mean to them.
Fraser thoroughly enjoyed his experience, and especially the plentiful treats he received.
Speaking about Clive’s recent photobombing of the Prime Minister during his visit to Henley, Sir Ed told Wokingham Today: “I laughed a lot when I first saw it.
“I believe we have a real chance of winning in both Henley and Wokingham, so the presence of the Liberal Democrats on the River Thames was pretty appropriate.”
“I think the Prime Minister was having another of his not terribly good days on the campaign trail.”
