Wokingham Today is hiring: part-time Social Media Coordinator

Are you a creative storyteller with a knack for digital content? Do you love exploring online trends and finding new ways to tell stories? Do you want to enter the world of digital journalism and receive on-the-job training to help you do so?

Then perhaps our new vacancy could offer the opportunity you’re looking for.

We’re looking for a Social Media Coordinator to turn our news into engaging digital content that tells our stories in different ways to help us grow our audience and continue our work to promote community journalism. 

You’ll work with our Editorial team to create eye-catching content, monitor analytics to report what’s working, and come up with fresh ideas for features, competitions, and community engagement.

Role Overview

We are seeking a creative, ideas-driven Social Media Coordinator to join our Editorial team on a part-time basis. This is an exciting opportunity to take the stories we publish every day and transform them into compelling, engaging content for Facebook and Instagram, helping us grow our audience, spark discussion, and increase traffic to our website. On-the-job training will be provided for this entry-level role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Content Creation & Publishing: Take news stories generated by the editorial team and adapt them for social media, using Canva to produce engaging static posts, carousels, Reels, and Stories.
  • Audience Engagement: Write captions and headlines that encourage discussion, sharing, and clicks, with a focus on storytelling and teasing content to drive traffic back to our site.
  • Analytics & Reporting:  Monitor social media performance and website referral traffic, sharing insights with the Editor on which stories and formats are performing best.
  • Creative Development:  Spot opportunities for original social-first features, competitions, and community-focused posts, including ideas that could support advertising and commercial partnerships.
  • Digital Branding: Ensure all posts reflect the tone, style, and values of Wokingham.Today and Reading.Today while actively working to grow followers and engagement.
  • Trend Monitoring: Keep an eye on social media trends and platform updates to make recommendations for new approaches to content and audience development.
  • Community management: Responding to messages, answering queries and directing story tip offs to the Editorial team as needed.

Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience managing Facebook and Instagram for a community organisation or group.
  • Proficiency in using Canva for creating eye-catching content.
  • Strong writing skills with the ability to craft compelling, clickable captions and headlines.
  • Willingness to learn social media analytics and editorial judgement.
  • Creative thinker with a passion for local news, community engagement, and digital storytelling.
  • Organised and proactive, able to work to deadlines in a fast-paced editorial environment.
