WOKINGHAM’S residents are being urged to get on their bike this month, as they are challenged to ride 50,000 miles.
To mark Cycle September, an initiative has been launched aimed at getting the borough back on two wheels.
The campaign aims to share the benefits of cycling, and is open to riders of all abilities, from beginners to Lycra-clad weekend warriors. The only requirement is to live or work in Wokingham and the surrounding areas.
Everyone who participates in Cycle September will also be entered into a nationwide competition to win a £4,000 holiday, and a Brompton folding e-bike, among other prizes.
There will be cash on offer for those who encourage friends and family to get back behind the wheel.
The campaign is organised by Love to Ride, an online cycling platform and app, in partnership with My Journey, Wokingham Borough Council’s active travel campaign.
Participants log their rides using the Love to Ride platform, and can enter goals to achieve.
Last year more than 360 people took part, and organisers say one in six were new to cycling.
In all, they journeyed 46,200 miles and made 1,814 trips, saving 2,800kgs of carbon dioxide.
Katie Brown, spokesperson for Love to Ride in Wokingham, said, “We’d love to see if those in and around Wokingham can get to 50,000 miles this year.
“Cycle September is a great opportunity to get on a bike, feel the benefits, and potentially win a prize in the process.
It’s also a great opportunity to get involved with and celebrate World Car Free Day on Friday, September 22, when people are encouraged to ditch their cars.
“We’d love to see more people making their journeys by bike instead.”
The Cycle September initiative is also open to businesses, and participants can join their workplace profile on Love to Ride, compete to earn the most points and top the local leaderboard in their size category.
