When our Queen passed away amongst many tears,
Charles finally inherited the throne,
This created a King for the first time in decades,
Which radically altered the tone.
Since then there’s been frenzied activity
Planning ways to mark the succession.
But times have changed since the Queen’s demise,
We’ve become a divided Nation,
Some are excited to have a new King
And can’t wait for the 6th of May,
Whilst others feel the royals are outdated,
So they’ll do something else that day!
Tis mainly the young with this view,
As they struggle each day to survive;
With inadequate pay and prices all rising,
Anxiety ever present…whilst they strive.
But for those who enjoy royal occasions,
The anticipation is truly exciting,
Many pitched tents in the Mall days before,
To secure a good view without fighting!
We British excel with our pageantry,
For this we are admired round the world,
With our horses and bandsmen parading,
While every flag in the country’s unfurled.
An ancient royal carriage is the focal point,
Every part of it coated in gold,
Within is the King and his Consort
Waving regally to their subjects, young and old.
TV cameras are in place on all corners,
Helicopters keeping watch from above,
Many thousands of police doing duty
Keeping watch on the crowds, hand and glove.
Now today the event is in action,
BBC doing an excellent job,
By showing the scenes in full detail.
While security keeps tabs on a mob.
Trafalgar Square is invaded by republicans
Waving banners inscribed ‘Not My King”,
So dozens are removed to police cells,
So the Coronation can go with a zing.
Festivities continued the next day
With a concert arranged later on;
The lawn at Windsor Castle was the Venue.
Here 20 thousand folk stood upon.
The music was decidedly varied,
(My mute button pressed many times!)
As singers just screamed into microphones
Drowning most of the musical lines.
But millions tuned into the concert,
Many royals were observed with our flag,
But I felt that Camilla’s expression
Showed concentration beginning to sag.
For once I felt sympathy with her station;
No mute button handy…..as for me,
She had to sit through all the racket,
With no opportunity to flee.
But the two youngest royals looked happy,
They’d been allowed to stay up really late,
For I guess it was well past their bedtimes
And school would be closed next day… great!
But the style of the music was varied,
To appeal to all tastes in the main,
By and large this ambition was successful
As the faces of the public made plain.
