Wokingham Pride started Pride Month with a fundraising quiz on 3rd June at The Rose Inn in Wokingham town centre.
The evening included a pub quiz and a raffle, and raised £120 for the annual pride celebration.
“We are hugely grateful to The Rose Inn and to everyone who donated prizes, including Gail’s Bakery, Cook and Richard Worth Estate Agents”, said Trustee Jillian Hardie.
Pride month is an international celebration of LGBTQ pride, which both commemorates the achievements and contributions of LGBTQ+ people, and raises awareness of the barriers and discrimination that the community faces worldwide. Libraries, schools and churches around Wokingham Borough are finding ways to build community bonds and understanding.
Wokingham Pride will take place on Saturday, 12th July 2025. The day will start with photos at Wokingham Town Hall at 11am.
There’s a parade from the marketplace through town at 11:30, and from midday to 5pm there will be bands and stalls on Elms Field. The day is free and everyone who supports the aims of Pride is welcome.
The Rose Inn has a monthly quiz night to raise funds for charity, held on the first Tuesday of the month. They also have a Pride Month Watermelon Sugar cocktail, with £1 of every one sold going to Ask For Clive, the charity which supports pubs and other venues to ensure a positive and inclusive environment for members of the LGBTQ+ community. “Wokingham Pride is promoting Ask For Clive amongst local venues”, said Chair of Trustees Rachel Bishop-Firth.
“They can provide promotional materials for your organisation, as well as a comprehensive briefing pack so that you can train your staff to address discrimination and hate incidents effectively.
“With the rise in hate crimes against LGBTQ+ people – especially trans people – in recent years, this is a great support to venues, especially in the hospitality sector”.
