An investigation into allegations of racial abuse by a Reading supporter during a League One match has concluded without any arrests or prosecutions, police have said.
The incident, which took place during Reading’s away game at Exeter City on 11 October, prompted a stoppage in play after reports that an Exeter player had been targeted. Officers from Devon and Cornwall Police reviewed CCTV footage, spoke with stewards and players, and investigated accounts from spectators.
A force spokesperson told the BBC that despite these enquiries, “none of those spoken to heard any racial abuse or were able to assist the investigation”, and that all lines of enquiry had now been exhausted. Officers said they attempted to identify and contact people who responded to a public appeal, but were unable to trace them.
Reading FC and Exeter City condemned the alleged abuse at the time, with both clubs reiterating that there is “no place for racism in football or in society”.
Police said they would continue to investigate if further information comes to light.
