THE SEARCH is on for a new standard bearer for the Royal British Legion in Winnersh.
Trevor Knights, who has held the role for the last 30 years, is hoping to pass the torch to the next generation, who will take part in ceremonies and parades.
Mr Knights, 72, said that a volunteer from within the club had not come forward to take up the role, so he is now appealing to the wider community.
He said: “It has been an honour and a privilege to carry the Winnersh and District standard for the last 30 years.
“I have carried it at countless parades and ceremonies, and was even asked to take part in the D-Day 60th anniversary. I have been to the Albert Hall six times.
“There’s a great comradery among standard bearers, we are very respectful when we are doing our job, but we do enjoy a pint afterwards.”
The new standard bearer can be anyone, male or female, over the age of 18.
They don’t need to have served in the military or be an existing member of the Royal British Legion, but do need to be mobile and able to carry the standard, which weighs around 10lbs.
The standard bearer must have access to transport, and be able to attend parades, in particular the Remembrance Sunday and November 11 ceremonies in Winnersh and Hurst.
