Former Reading FC player Nicky Shorey will return to the club in the role as Lead Scout within the Academy.
Shorey enjoyed a long and successful career at Reading, making well over 300 appearances in two spells at the club including being part of the prominent 106 point Championship winning side which saw the Royals achieve promotion to the English top flight for the first time in the club’s history in 2005/06.
The left-back also earned a call-up for England after his consistent performances for Reading and went on to win two caps for his country in 2007, making his full international debut in a 1-1 draw against Brazil in England’s first match at the new Wembley Stadium.
Shorey made history by becoming the first Reading player in almost 100 years to appear for the England national team at senior level and made his second and final appearance for the Three Lions in a 2-1 friendly defeat against Germany in August 2007.
He then re-joined the Royals for a second spell after the club won its second promotion to the Premier League in the 2011/12 season, and made 17 top flight appearances in the 2012/13 season.
Reading have also announced the appointment of a new U23’s assistant manager as Mehmet Ali joins the Berkshire club from Tottenham Hotspur where he worked as a youth development coach.
