Members of the Woodley and Earley Lions attended the offices of First Days Children’s Charity in Whistley Green, Hurst, earlier this month, where Lion President Paul Norman handed over a cheque for £1,000.
The award follows a request to the Lions for financial assistance towards funding their new secondary schools uniform project in Woodley.
Presenting the cheque, Woodley and Earley Lions president Paul said: “Woodley and Earley Lions are delighted to support this exciting new scheme designed to help around 200 disadvantaged children in Woodley.”
Speaking after the presentation, fundraising manager Annette Honeyball thanked the Lions for their generous support.
She added: “First Days takes donated toys, clothes, equipment and school uniform and redistributes them to families struggling to make ends meet.
“This award goes a long way towards helping us purchase new uniforms where there are shortages in donated clothing.”
This new project, which aims to replicate a similar scheme operating in the Norrey’s Ward within Wokingham, involves the provision of school uniform to secondary school pupils attending Bulmershe School and Waingels College in Woodley.
Families in poverty are referred to First Days by Health and support professionals.
All clothing is donated, although sometimes has to be purchased new, and gifted to these needy families.
