Mr Fix-It. At Least that is what my wife calls me.
If anything is broken I will do my best to repair it rather than replace it.
Recently I was challenged by a malfunctioning toilet cistern valve.
On YouTube I found a video of an expert resolving exactly the same problem.
He surprised me by recommending the purchase of a replacement unit at less than £10 rather than spending time undertaking a repair.
So, against my normal inclination, I took his advice – problem solved.
Most of today’s media headlines remind us that humanity is broken.
Hatred, violence, injustice, disorder, division and wrongdoing are rife.
Uncertainty and fear abound.
The Times once sent out an inquiry to famous authors, asking the question, “What’s wrong with the world today?” and G K Chesterton responded simply,
“Dear Sir, I am.”
The truth is we are all in the same boat and are incapable of doing anything about it.
The good news is that there is a man who can!
This weekend includes the first Sunday of Advent.
Advent means ‘coming’ and is a time when churches prepare to celebrate the coming into the world of Jesus some 2,000 years ago.
Why did Jesus come? He came to recreate us into new people capable of living helpful, loving, productive lives. How much did that cost?
A lot more than £10 – it cost Jesus his life!
He who was perfect died for us imperfect people to renew our broken lives – a unique Mr Fix-it well worth inviting in.
