Reading FC manager Paul Ince has been impressed with the early impact of goalkeeper Joe Lumley.
Lumley joined the Royals on a season-long loan deal from Middlesbrough earlier in the transfer window.
He made his Royals debut on the opening day of the Championship last week against Blackpool and made some excellent saves.
“When you talk about goalkeeper it’s not just about the saves that they make,” said Ince.
“It’s about the organisation he’s got a voice, you can always hear him organising the back four because he can see it all.
“It’s important to have those kind of leadership qualities.
“When I played for Man United with Peter Schmeichel I could hear him shouting at me from midfield when he was in our goal. You listen because those are the demands you put on each other and Joe has given that to us.”
Ince explained that he was given several positive reviews when scouting Lumley for a summer move.
He continued: “He organises, pulls people around and makes saves. That’s something maybe last year we didn’t have a goalkeeper that could keep us in the game and Joe did that last week with the save he made against Bowler.
“He’s got a presence about him and has played enough games in the Championship and he’s only going to get better.
“The sad thing about last year is we had Karl Hein who started for me against Birmingham and made some fantastic saves.
“Obviously then he got injured but he probably would have been the main stay and might have been here now.
“We were then scratching around trying to find the right man which is never easy but we didn’t have time to think about it because we needed a goalkeeper.
“So last year was a bit of a rush but this summer time we’ve had time to think about it and looked at one or two.
“I spoke to Matt Murray who is a very good friend of mine and was my goalkeeper at Wolves and we got raving reviews about him.
“I like him a lot, he’s a great character and sometimes that’s what you need for a long season ahead.”
