Wokingham in Bloom kicked off its new schools initiative at Westende Junior School last weekend.
To get the project off to a flying start, volunteers from across the Wokingham in Bloom family, Wokingham town mayor Cllr Sally Gurney and employees from principal sponsor SecureHeat joined forces to provide a helping hand.
Westende Junior School is the first of what is hoped to be many schools that Wokingham in Bloom hopes will get involved.
The project at Westende includes establishing a weekly gardening club to introduce children to the joy of growing their own food, and activities to attract local birds and pollinators into the school garden.
The project will be led by a team of volunteers who are looking forward to working with the children and share their skills and knowledge.
Councillor Morag Malvern, chair of the Wokingham in Bloom committee said; ‘Through gardening, wildlife and conservation projects, Wokingham in Bloom has had a huge impact on the local community, not only bringing unloved areas to life but bringing people of all ages together in the fresh air for a common purpose.
“It’s a real privilege to be involved with one of our local schools, encouraging children outside and passing knowledge onto the next generation.
“We have got lots of little projects planned for Westende including bug hotels, a wormery and teaching children all about plants.”
Wokingham in Bloom is delighted to have SecureHeat, a Wokingham-based company providing plumbing and heating cover plans for domestic and commercial clients, as principal external sponsors this year.
Managing director Will Monk and his team have been on-board for just over a year helping with projects large and small.
He said: ‘Wokingham in Bloom is at the heart of the community, encouraging volunteering and fostering new friendships which in turn, help make Wokingham such a beautiful place to live.
“SecureHeat is based in Wokingham, and we believe in supporting and nurturing the community in which we live and work.
“We’re delighted to be supporting for another year.”
Cllr Malvern added: “New volunteers are always welcome, however much time they have.
“We can always find a project for new volunteers, or help develop one.
