A CHURCH in Wokingham is holding an event to highlight green initiatives in the area, and people are asked to save the date.
All Saints Church’s Earth Fayre is an opportunity for residents to find out more about what is being done in Wokingham to promote earth friendly practices.
All Saints Climate Matters group has been planning the fair for some time and is in the final stages of preparation.
Rising global temperatures have been a feature of news stories in recent months, with extreme weather events causing alarm at a number of world locations.
The Climate Matters group says that climate change is definitely upon us now, and will affect every person on the planet.
They add that individuals may feel powerless to know how to respond, and they may decide that it is up to governments to act on their behalf.
But, argues the group, governments will be focussed more on the effects of change upon international trade, profits of powerful corporations, and values of stocks and shares, than on the health of the planet itself.
Dates for reaching carbon net zero are described by Climate Matters as timid and distant.
Nature, the group says, pays no attention to these deadlines, and will not wait for us to act.
We are largely responsible for the damage to God’s creation, they say, and should not accept helplessness, but instead should work together for positive change.
As an Eco Church, All Saints gives its congregation ideas for more climate or eco-friendly ways to live daily life.
Michael Freeman, a member of the church’s Climate Matters group, said: ” The purpose of this event is to empower people to be able to do something about climate change.
“It’s easy to put it off, but if each person just does one thing, and then passes that on, eventually there will be a whole group of people creating positive change.
“Global warming is going to affect all of us.
“So far it’s not too bad, but we, and governments, must act decisively now.
“Climate change is already here, but I believe we can avoid catastrophe, if we all play our part.”
Earth Fayre will bring together a host of individuals and organisations, and give visitors lots of ideas for positive ways to recycle, making their homes and lives more earth friendly, and doing things differently.
There will be activities to engage children, stalls where people can ask face to face questions, informative videos, and music.
“We cannot just wait for governments of the world to act,” added Mr Freeman.
“We need to act too.”
Earth Fayre takes place inside All Saints Church, Norreys, on Saturday, September 23.
Doors will be open from 10am until 4pm.
