Wokingham Borough Council is encouraging children to get involved with the Winter Mini Challenge, which asks them to read at least three books.
Organised by The Reading Agency, the challenge kicks off on Friday, December 1, and runs until Monday February 19. It will continue the ‘Ready, Set, Read!’ theme from the Summer Reading Challenge, which partnered with the Youth Sport Trust to keep minds and bodies active during the summer break.
This is a bitesize version of the main summer scheme, with children only needing to read three books to complete the challenge instead of six. It is free, entirely online and children can unlock rewards for finishing books, with lots of fun activities available on the dedicated children’s website.
Cllr Sarah Kerr, executive member for climate emergency and resident services, said: “I am pleased to see the theme of ‘Ready, Set, Read’ struck a chord with so many people during the summer break and that The Reading Agency is bringing that momentum into the Winter Mini Challenge.
“The challenge aims to convert even the most reluctant readers and show them that there is something out there that everyone can enjoy.
“You need to read three books to complete the challenge, but if you want to explore further, we would absolutely encourage you to explore further what our libraries have to offer.”
How to get involved
It is easy to take part in the Winter Mini Challenge. Encourage children to read at least three books of their choice and add them to their online profile. Reaching their reading goal will allow them to unlock a limited-edition virtual badge and a special Winter Mini Challenge certificate to print off and keep.
Children can access games, book reviews, activities and content from top children’s authors and illustrators. For parents, there is also a Home Zone and Library Zone, which has more information and top tips.
If residents need help taking part in this challenge, staff at libraries across the borough will be happy to help by offering book recommendations and how to get the most out of the online resources available.
