A GROUP of repairers and fixers is offering free workshops designed to support wildlife and inspire children to repair, build, and reuse.
Members of Spencers Wood Repair Cafe will help youngsters in borough schools and youth groups to make bird boxes from wood offcuts.
“This is a new venture, and a long term project,” said repair cafe organiser Billie Bachra.
“We have two sources of wood offcuts, and three volunteers who turn these into assembly ready bird box kits.
“It’s an absolute no-brainer, we have all this wood lying around, and we have this great opportunity to make bird boxes for wildlife, while teaching young people about the repair/rebuild/reuse ethos.”
Bird box workshops take place in school, or at the youth organisation premises, and can be adapted to the needs of the group.
Volunteers help with assembly, and can advise the best place to locate the boxes.
“We’re delighted that four groups of children, a school group, and three girl guide units, are already booked in,” said Ms Bachra.
“They will be able to create nesting boxes they can take away and put up at school or at home.”
As part of the kit, each child is given all the necessary nails and tacks, and safety goggles.
They can decorate their box, too, if they wish with paint and brushes supplied by the organisation.
“We’ve already got around 100 of these kits ready for the children,” said Ms Bachra, “ but we would be grateful for help in packaging them.
“Ideally we would love to receive donations of recyclable bags, whether plastic, fabric, or paper.
“We’d also be delighted for more people to visit our Spencers Wood Repair Cafe, which meets at Lambs Lane Primary School, on the third Sunday of the month, from 10 am until 1pm.”
