ONE OF the borough’s four MPs has resigned from his government position today, one of 38 who have stepped down in the past 24 hours.
James Sunderland, whose Bracknell constituency includes parts of Wokingham Without and Crowthorne, announced on Facebook that he had decided to step down from his role at DEFRA.
His resignation puts increased pressure on Boris Johnson to quit as prime minister in the wake of numerous scandals, the latest of which relates to a former whip, Chris Pincher.
Mr Johnson and Number 10 initially denied knowing about Pincher’s reputation going back over several years. However, since Sunday, that has unravelled.
It led to the resignation of health secretary Sajid Javid and chancellor Rishi Sunak.
This led to more junior ministers stepping down.
Today, Mr Sunderland became one of them.
In a post on Facebook, he said: “I have today resigned as Parliamentary Private Secretary to DEFRA.
“I would like to thank everyone who has taken the trouble to share their views with me in recent months.
“I continue to serve the people of Bracknell, Crowthorne, Finchampstead, Sandhurst and Wokingham Without to the best of my ability.”
It is thought that Mr Johnson will be expected to resign as early as this evening.
