MOTORISTS were faced with long delays last week as a major route through Winnersh was closed.
King Street Lane was shut for several days to allow for contractors to carry out works surrounding the Winnersh Relief Road, but the closure had a knock-on effect to motorists as far away as Arborfield.
Some drivers were reporting delays of up to an hour, and many schoolchildren were delayed in getting to school on time.
But Wokingham Borough Council (WBC) insists that the problems were caused by a broken down bus in Wokingham and delays on the M4 motorway.
Cllr Chris Bowring, WBC’s executive member for highways and transport, said: “There were unexpected pressures on our network last week – significant delays on the M4, traffic light problems on Reading Road, and a broken down bus at Wokingham Station.
“The King Street Lane work is one of the key primary stages in the construction of the Winnersh Relief Road. The timetable for this relief road, as with all major schemes, is designed to work around other highways projects across the borough. Delaying King Street Lane would have caused long term conflicts and bigger problems. However, the work is now done and the road open.”
The road reopened on Friday, December 15.
