THE FORMER leader of the council has resigned from his latest post as the borough’s executive member for highways and transport.
The decision was announced by current council leader Cllr Charlotte Haitham Taylor at a meeting of the Executive (Wokingham borough’s cabinet) on Thursday, June 28.
She said: “Cllr Keith Baker has decided to step down as Executive Member for Highways and Transport.
“I want to thank Keith for his contribution to the Executive over the last six months and I hope that he will continue standing up for his residents in Woodley and promoting the excellent work of Woodley Town Council, where he will be focusing on his role as leader.
“I will be announcing a new executive member soon. In the meantime, Cllr Anthony Pollock will be covering the day-to-day work in Highways and Transport.”
The role of Highways and Transport has become a poisoned chalice for the Conservatives in recent years. The brief looks after day-to-day running of the borough’s road network as well as some of the new road schemes being introduced including the second phase of the Winnersh Relief Road.
Since The Wokingham Paper launched three years ago, there have been four councillors in the role: Cllr John Kaiser, Cllr Malcolm Richards, Cllr Chris Bowring, and Cllr Baker. The fifth has yet to be announced.
