To celebrate David Wilson Homes’ annual ‘No Mow May’ campaign, the housebuilder has partnered with Arborfield brownies and California Gardeners’ Club to create colourful hanging baskets to bring new life to the development in time for warmer months.
Using pollinator-friendly plants recommended by the California Gardeners’ Club, including geraniums, African daisies, fuchsias and lobelias, the Brownies worked with members of the club to create hanging baskets which will be displayed at the Finchwood Park development.
The activity marks No Mow May, an annual campaign that calls on lawn owners to put their mowers away to let spring plants and wildflowers grow.
With a 97% decline in flower-rich meadows since 1930, butterflies and bees have lost the vital amount of nectar they need to survive.
The hanging baskets created by the community groups will provide essential food for pollinator species on the development, as well as bringing new life and colour to the outdoor areas.
The brownies also had the chance to interview Chloe Lopez, a graduate at Barratt David Wilson Home Southern Counties, on her role in the property industry, to work towards their job badge.
Karen King, girlguiding Wokingham joint division commissioner, said: “The girls had a fantastic time at Finchwood Park, enjoying hands-on gardening experience with the California Gardeners to create beautiful baskets, while also learning more about the opportunities for women within the construction industry.
“We love to take our brownies out into the community to experience educational and fun activities, and we were pleased to have this opportunity with David Wilson Homes.”
