Mystery surrounds the origins of a structure that has been unearthed in a Finchampstead garden.
Andrew Cracknell contacted Wokingham Today after discovering the underground structure under his patio in Nash Grove Lane.
He initially thought it could be a bomb shelter.
He said: “I’ve had damp issues and I was trying to find the soak-away.
“I found a cavity, and it just kept going.”
One interesting aspect is that one end of the structure has what appears to be a trellis-type brickwork feature.
He has yet to venture inside until he can be sure the “roof” is stable.
Andrew moved into the property in February 2021, and talks with his neighbours have failed to shed light on what the structure could be.
Peter Must, chairman of the Wokingham Society, expressed an interest in determining the origins of the six foot by six foot “room”.
He is now in contact with the homeowner.
One explanation, although not confirmed, could be that the room may have been related to a manor house or farm, and used as an underground food storage facility.
