FORGET the Nine Mile Ride, this was the Nine Mile Hike.
On Friday, May 25, a group of 15 people tackled the infamous road in a bid to raise funds and awareness
for a charity that helps people with dementia.
The team comprised staff members from County Carers along with clients and their family members.
Some walked for part of it, others for all of it, but all had one aim in mind: helping the Alzheimer’s
Society.
Shelby Ratcliffe, regional director for County Carers, said: “We have so many of our clients that suffer
with it, so it’s something we’ve passionate about.
“We’re always trying new techniques [to help clients]. We keep up to date with what’s going on.”
Ms Ratcliffe added that all staff that join are trained to become a Dementia Friend during their induction
process and the company helps the Society with its research in a bid to find a cure.
The walk on Friday was one way in which they could help. They left their offices in Barkham Ride and
walked to the Golden Retriever where a celebratory drink was awaiting them.
“We were told that if we raised £250, they [ Alzheimer’s Society] would be over the moon.
“The whole organisation is aiming to raise £10,000 this week with thousands of fundraisers all trying to
help … we have knocked away at their big target by raising more than £1,400 in 10 days, with donations
still coming in! I really hope that helps show our dedication and commitment to get County Carers
representing the whole of Wokingham as a community.
“This is what we love to do – to help those who are vulnerable live a more fulfilled life at home with all the
support and care they need. Alzheimer’s Society helps County Carers make that a reality.”
Tim Waters from The Alzheimer’s Society said: “Without the help of such fantastic supporters such as
the staff and service users at County Carers the Alzheimer’s Society would not be able to continue the
fight against dementia.
“Our vision is a world without dementia and fundraising by amazing people such as all those at County
Carers is giving us the tools to realise that vision.”
