TODAY, Saturday, September 10, is Proclamation Day – when the new sovereign is proclaimed at St James Palace in London at 11am.
Tomorrow, a similar ceremony will take place in Wokingham town, while Woodley will hold its ceremony on Monday, September 12.
This is a traditional ceremony that formally announces the new king or queen – in this case, King Charles III – and in olden times was the way in which most people found out that the monarch had changed.
As previous proclamations have taken place at Wokingham town hall, the tradition is being maintained.
The ceremony, at 2pm on Sunday, September 11, will see representatives from town and parish councils attend along with local dignitaries.
It will take place outside the entrance to the RYND cafe in Market Place, and if previous ceremonies are anything to go by, the event will attract a large crowd.
People can also leave floral tributes by the town hall where the Christmas tree normally goes, and there will be a book of condolence to sign inside the town hall.
To help, temporary road closures will be in place between 11.30am and 4pm.
During these times, traffic will not be able to go through the town centre – similar road closures to those experienced for the May Fayre or Winter Carnival.
The alternative route for all southbound traffic shall be via A329 Rectory Road, A329 Wiltshire Road, A329 Peach Street, Easthampstead Road, Heathlands Road, B3439 Nine Mile Ride, A321 Sandhurst Road and A321 Finchampstead Road, Molly Millars Lane, Barkham Ride and Station Approach.
The alternative route for all northbound traffic shall be via Cross Street and Rose Street.
Wokingham Borough Council-owned car parks are free on Sundays.
The Woodley ceremony will be held on Monday, September, 12, from 12.30pm.
The Town Council Deputy Leader, Cllr Shadi Brindley, will make a statement at Centre Stage in the town centre, followed by the Proclamation, which will be read by Woodley Town Mayor, Cllr Janet Sartorel.
