LOCAL CHILDREN are being challenged to read and review three books during the winter holidays this year.

The Winter Mini Challenge starts on Monday, December 2 and finishes on Monday, January 13. Children are being encouraged to read any three books of their choice and then rate them depending on how much they enjoyed them.

The challenge has been inspired by Pugs of the Frozen North, a frosty adventure story by Philip Reeve and Sarah McIntyre.

If they complete the challenge, this will unlock a virtual badge and a special Pugs of the Frozen North certificate to print off and keep.

Children will also be able to access fun activities and reading recommendations online.

Libraries in the Wokingham Borough hope to continue the fun, offering Pugs of the Frozen North activity sheets for children to complete when they visit.

The challenge was launched by the Reading Agency in a national campaign to keep children reading through the winter holidays.

“The winter months provide a fantastic opportunity to improve your little ones reading ability, as it’s easy to snuggle up with a book. That’s why we are delighted to be joining The Reading Agency’s national Winter Mini Challenge,” Said Elizabeth McDonald, young people and families outreach manager, Wokingham Borough Libraries.

“There are so many ways to take part, whether you want to pop in to borrow books from our libraries or would prefer to access our e-books instead. We’re encouraging as many children as possible to sign-up.”
