THIS third Sunday of Advent will be celebrated on December 14.
Gaudete (joy) Sunday means the waiting is nearly over.
A pink candle will be lit in the Advent wreath alongside the two purple candles as a visual reminder of our journey’s progress; an opportunity to be joyful about the coming of Christ in a few days.
Advent is about our preparation for His coming, His humble birth, and Mary and Joseph’s challenging journey.
We reflect on how we have prepared during Advent for this great, joyous mystery of Christian faith.
As Christians with busy lives, we can still make time for prayer and show compassion to those suffering.
We can be aware of the traumas in people’s lives and consider what God is asking of us.
Like Mary and Joseph, today we see thousands of people having to make painful and difficult journeys.
Some are pregnant, or displaced, seeking sanctuary, basic needs and support, fleeing conflict, facing hunger, drought, flooding and journeying in hostile places.
Poverty, inequality, and violence can seem distant.
It may feel that there is nothing we can do.
Our prayers, compassion and support for those who can bring change are essential.
Advent offers us time to explore our role, supporting charities and advocates for justice for all God’s people.
Let Gaudete Sunday be a time for us to thank God for all His gifts and joyfully share what we can.
Dr Ann Wylie is a member of Corpus Christi RC Church, which meets at 9am and 11am on Sundays.
