A £6.6 million affordable home scheme closes to Wokingham town centre was approved by the ruling executive when they met on Thursday, July 27.
The site on Wellington Road will see 18 apartments built, with five for care leavers, and 13 for key workers.
It will be funded through developer contributions for affordable housing, a grant from Homes England, and the council borrowing from the Housing Revenue Account.
Introducing the scheme, the leader of the council, Cllr Stephen Conway, said: “This scheme will make a very welcome contribution to the council’s housing revenue account, catering for two groups in need of affordable accommodation.”
Cllr Rachel Bishop-Firth also welcomed the scheme “as the cost of housing in the borough pushes far too many people into a very precarious financial position.
“The site is a small parcel of land on the corner by Wokingham Station. It’s currently unused and it can’t really be sensibly used for recreation or another purpose.”
Cllr Conway added: “It is a wonderfully placed development in terms of access to services and public transport links. It’s really very sustainable.”
