WOKINGHAM residents have been afforded more time to share their views on some of the area’s travel infrastructure.
A consultation on possible improvements to the borough’s walking and cycling routes has been pushed back to Sunday, September 4.
Wokingham Borough Council received 8,000 comments from over 1,600 respondents between July 11, and August 19, regarding its draft Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP).
The initiative drew interest from residents through various communications via the council’s website, social media and newsletters.
The council has decided to extend the deadline, believing those keen to offer their thoughts may not have had enough time to get in touch before the end of the summer holiday.
It is urging anyone who wishes to make a comment to take advantage of the extended deadline.
Wokingham Borough Council wants to make walking and cycling as comfortable as possible for all, establishing learnings in a previous consultation in 2021.
The LCWIP is a ‘high-level’ plan outlining improvements that could be made in the next decade, but does not commit the council to implementing them.
Publishing the plan will help in securing government funding, with another consultation taking place before any ideas are actioned.
Cllr Paul Fishwick, executive member for active travel, transport and highways, said: “Nothing outlined in this plan is a ‘done deal’ but we need some idea of the direction we’re heading in if we want things to improve in future and we’re pleased to have extended the consultation so more people can take part.
“By creating more opportunities for walking and cycling through a joined-up network of routes, we will reduce the number of vehicles using our roads, especially for shorter trips. This is a long-term, forward-thinking and sustainable strategy for reducing congestion and will make things easier for residents, visitors and businesses.
“More importantly, it will play a major role in improving air quality and tackling the climate emergency through a significant reduction in carbon emissions and other pollutants.
“As the cost of living continues to rise, and with concerns about obesity and inactivity still widespread, it will also improve access to a healthier and more affordable way of getting about.”
