AN INVESTIGATION has been launched after emergency crews were called to a busy Wokingham road to help a person who fell into a trench.
Roadworks are in place on Reading Road, and are thought to be for the installation of ultrafast broadband.
The works started on Monday, and are expected to finish by Friday, June 2.
Temporary barriers have been installed on Reading Road to protect pedestrians from traffic while the works take place.
The incident happened at lunchtime on Thursday, May 25, at the works close to Wokingham Bowling Centre and the turning into Station Road.
It is not known how the injured person came to be in the ditch. There is no suggestion that the firm conducting the works, The Electricity Network Company Limited, or the injured person were at fault.
Once the alarm was raised, police, ambulance, and fire brigade crews were sent to the scene.
A spokesperson for Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 1.30pm on Thursday, May 25, we received reports that someone had fallen into a ditch on Reading Road in Wokingham.
“Crews from Wokingham and Wokingham Road Fire Stations were sent to the scene.
“Upon arrival, crews extricated a woman from the ditch and placed her in the care of South Central Ambulance Service.”
The woman was taken to hospital for treatment.
The Electricity Network Company Limited is investigating and will respond in due course.
