A special event offering information and advice on dementia and mental health is being held in Mortimer tomorrow.
The evening session is aimed at older people who are suffering from dementia or mental health issues, or people who are caring for family or friends.
It’s being held at St John’s Hall on Wednesday, June 26, and has been organised by Mortimer Surgery’s Patient Participation Group to show people the wide range of support available and how to access it.
Speakers include Dr Matt Evans, senior consultant in Older Person’s Mental Health Services at Beechcroft Memory Clinic, Thatcham, and Michelle Berry, chair of Reading’s Dementia Action Alliance (DAA) and Reading Borough Council’s Neighbourhood Co-ordinator (Older People’s Services).
There will be a range of information leaflets available promoting services like Social Prescribing which helps people find local groups and activities to join and make new friends.
Shirley Cullup, chair of the Patient Participation Group, said: “So many people are unfortunately affected by mental health issues and dementia and it can be a very lonely and isolating experience.
“It’s also a huge responsibility for family and friends who are having to look after them. They often struggle to know where to turn for help.
“But there is a lot of help out there, it’s just knowing where to look and we hope this event will point people in the right direction.”
The event is free and starts at 6.45pm. Light refreshments will be available.
