EVERY STEP COUNTS: Here’s to many years of happiness

Well here we go for another week of our awesome Every Step Counts column and this week it is ARTICLE NUMBER 150…

August is here. The summer is flying by and wow, what a summer it has been so far.

To be honest, the Summer is getting even better as Friday was the start of one of my good friend’s wedding celebrations. I’m writing ahead of the weekend, and it is going to be a seriously amazing wedding. They won’t mind me saying it, but Luke and Laura don’t do things traditionally and this wedding is going to be very special. It spans over 3 days and will have a mix of Mexican food, barbecue food, roast dinners, lots of drinks, musical entertainment and some very interesting performance acts.

I will say it now as I said yesterday morning … CONGRATULATIONS, MR AND MRS SMITH … HERE IS TO MANY YEARS OF HAPPINESS AHEAD.

For this week’s article and I have actually used my research for my best man’s speech as a driver for the content. I have been researching interesting quotes and in doing so I stumbled across a great database of famous sporting quotes from famous sportsmen and women.

I would like to share with you a few of those today and share some insights into how you can use them to move forward with your life.

So here we go…

“I tell the kids, somebody’s gotta win, somebody’s gotta lose. Just don’t fight about it. Just try to get better.”

I think Yogi Berra was completely right here. There are always winners and losers, but the main outcome is that the teams should aim to learn from the experience and do better next time.

  • What could you be doing better right now?
  • What have you learned from your last win?
  • How have you adapted since your last loss?

“I think my greatest victory was every time I walked out there, I gave it everything I had. I left everything out there. That’s what I’m most proud of.”

The great Jimmy Connors got it bang on. Don’t leave anything to chance when you go on the court that is life. Give everything your best, give everything your 100% even if you must force yourself to do it. Be proud and give life your best shot … you only get the one life after all.

“I’ll do whatever it takes to win games, whether it’s sitting on a bench waving a towel, handing a cup of water to a teammate, or hitting the game-winning shot.”

If there is one guy I love and respect, it is Kobe Bryant. The guy was insanely good and insanely professional. A true winner. Whether you are playing lead role or supporting actor, give it your best. If your job seems minor, who cares, give it your best. Do whatever it takes and go the extra mile, let the win start the ripple of awesomeness.

“Winning isn’t getting ahead of others. It’s getting ahead of yourself.”

Roger Staubach was on the right path with this one. A quote I like to say a lot in my coaching centre is “the biggest opponent you’ll face is yourself”. Focus on you and being the best version of YOU and see what happens. You cannot control others, but you can control yourself and your behaviours.

  • What do you need to get ahead in right now?
  • What is going to propel you forward the most today?

“Competing at the highest level is not about winning. It’s about preparation, courage, understanding and nurturing your people, and heart. Winning is the result.”

Joe Torre had his head in the game with this beauty. Winning is the result but the journey is the goal.

  • What journey are you on now?
  • Have you prepared the right way?
  • Have you set yourself up for success or failure?

“For me, winning isn’t something that happens suddenly on the field when the whistle blows and the crowds roar. Winning is something that builds physically and mentally every day that you train and every night that you dream.”

Another great quote above and this time it’s Emmitt Smith. Success and winning at life doesn’t happen overnight. It can take months and years to get that major win. In life terms, getting up for one morning for meditation wont seal you the deal of awesomeness, you need to do it regularly and consistently. You need to train your mind and body to deliver the results you want and need.

“I never did say that you can’t be a nice guy and win. I said that if I was playing third base and my mother rounded third with the winning run, I’d trip her up.”

What a classic by Leo Durocher. I get what he is saying here. You must be selfish when it comes to achieving certain things. Sometimes you must make huge sacrifices to get what you want. Therefore, you must align yourself with people that will help you achieve what you want in life. People come to work with me because they want the very best that MIND, BODY and LIFE Coaching has to offer. I love this hence why I give them everything I have to enable them to be truly AWESOME and truly HAPPY.

So, there you go for another week of motivation, inspiration and education.

What did you get the most from this week’s article and what point are you going to focus on the most until next week? Think hard … your life and future happiness is at stake here.

One last time … Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Smith … I hope the day is as magical and special as it can be.

Happy Sunday … now go and make the world a happier healthier place.
