Wokingham’s annual May Fayre, organised by Wokingham Lions Club, is set to take place on bank holiday Monday, May 5, 2025.

The government has announced that May 5 will also be the start of a four day celebration of the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

Wokingham Lions Club has said it will be encouraging stallholders to get out the bunting, and to wear union jack hats and t-shirts for a fun day in Wokingham town centre.

The May Fayre will take place in the centre of town, including on Elms Field, from 10am until 5pm.

With more than 150 stalls, plus rides, food and drink outlets, a children’s farm, ferret racing and other entertainment events, there will be something for everyone.

All funds raised will be going to support charities and good causes, mostly in the Wokingham area.

This year, Wokingham Lions Club has chosen three main charities to benefit from the May Fayre, sharing around 50% of the money raised among them.

They are:-

Building for the Future:

This local charity supports children and young adults with disabilities and/or additional needs and their families. Having recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of their centre called ‘Our House’, they are now supporting more than 500 families each year. Building for the Future has now outgrown its current premises and are actively looking to relocate. This will take effort, time and money, so raising their profile and funds this year is paramount. Visit

www.bftf.org.uk to find out more.

Promise Inclusion:

Formerly known as Wokingham, Bracknell District’s Mencap. Promise Inclusion want anyone living with a learning disability to have access to provision, facilities and opportunities which will enrich their lives and empower them within the ocal community. Their support is for both children and adults and covers siblings and carers too. More details can be found at www.promiseinclusion.org.

Younger People with Dementia:

Although dementia is generally considered a condition of the elderly, it is estimated that more than 70,000 people are currently living with a diagnosis of ‘Young Onset Dementia’ in the UK, that is they are under 65 when diagnosed. Younger People with Dementia, are based in Wokingham, but provide help to those with the condition in Berkshire, as well as parts of Surrey and North-east Hampshire. They give practical advice, run workshops and groups as well as social events. Further information is available at www.ypwd.info.

May Fayre chairman Andy Goffin is looking forward to this year’s event.

He said: “The Wokingham May Fayre started in 1995.

“Organised by the Wokingham Lions Club, it is one of the largest street fairs in the south of England.

“The main goals of the May Fayre are to provide a low-cost and fun family event, and to enable local charities and other groups to raise money for their causes.

“It is a wonderful day out for families and people of all ages, with entertainment throughout the town, where we celebrate the town’s culture and this year the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

“Wokingham Lions Club is working very hard to make it a success, and our thanks go to Wokingham town council, who give us such tremendous support, as well as Clifton Ingram, our main sponsor.”

Wokingham Lions Club would also like to thank the following sponsors and supporters; The Wokingham Society, Allder Group, Nuffield Health, Blandy & Blandy, Melanie Curtis Accountants, Sticky Metal Art, The Crispin, Haringtons Hairdressing, The Wokingham Word, Wokingham Today and Wokingham Local. Wokingham Lions Club is always pleased to welcome new sponsors, supporters and on-the-day volunteers, to find out more, simply contact them via their website or by telephone.
