WHEN things get difficult, having the chance to speak to others who have been through similar experiences can be reassuring.
Peer support groups can help to bring people together to provide mutual support around mental health and wellbeing, in a safe and welcoming space.
Mental health support charity Mind In Berkshire has set up new peer support groups in Wokingham town centre, where people can find help to get the support that’s right for them.
On Monday and Thursday afternoons peer support groups offer people a chance to enjoy tea and biscuits and a chat, or take part in activities as they wish.
Each meeting is slightly different, with a very open structure, with people invited to say what they would like to do each week.
On Wednesday mornings people are encouraged to explore their creativity at an art group.
Materials are provided, but participants can bring in their own supplies and projects if they would like to.
The aim is to create space to be creative and to foster meaningful connections with others, in a safe space where people can talk about wellbeing and mental health.
All groups are run in person at the Wokingham Charity & Community Hub in Waterford House.
Mind In Berkshire is now taking professional and self-referrals for adults living in Wokingham, or registered with a Wokingham GP Practice.
Service users need to wait to be called and booked into an upcoming group session – the organisation cannot accept drop-ins.
Referrals can be made by visiting the Joy App: services.thejoyapp.com and searching for Wokingham Peer Support Groups, or by calling Wokingham Charity and Community Hub, On: 0118 228 0480.
