THE TOWN’S firefighters were among those helping tackle a lorry blaze on the M4 on Sunday night.
Pumps from Wokingham, Bracknell, Langley, Slough and Camberley provided relief cover for the crews in London who were called out to an incident which saw the slip road for the M25 at junction 4B – one of the busiest in the country – closed for most of the night.
A problem with the rear axle is believed to have started the fire which ripped through an articulated Tesco lorry carrying groceries.
The driver, who was not hurt, had managed to pull the vehicle over to the hard shoulder before alerting the emergency services at around 7.30pm.
Because of the severity of the fire, the decision was taken to close the junction, which links the eastbound M4 with the clockwise M25 for safety reasons.
The road only reopened to traffic earlier this morning.
The local crews arrived at the scene at around 10pm and spent some four hours helping dampen down the vehicle and assist with its recovery.
Also attending the incident was the Zetros tanker from Bracknell and the water bouser from Camberley.
