Fire crews rushed to a house on fire at Wright Close in Woodley at around 4pm today (Monday, November 2).
When fire fighters arrived they were faced with a major house fire with flames shooting out of the roof area. Crews were wearing breathing apparatus and using two main water jets as they tackled the flames.
To help avoid smoke contamination, residents of nearby houses were told to close their windows and doors.
Crews had to strip off all the tiles to the damaged house as, at one point during the blaze, the roof area had started to collapse. They also managed to contain the fire to the property in question – as our pictures show, it did not spread.
We understand that neighbours raised the alarm and that the smoke could be seen across the Woodley area.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
Fire fighters will remain at the scene for most of the night as they dampen down the flames and ensure that the building is safe.
