AS JACK Frost’s grip on the borough continues, residents are being invited to get some free winter driving tips at a special roadshow event being held on Thursday.
Wokingham Borough Council’s road safety team will be in Tesco Superstore, Finchampstead Road from 11am to 3pm.
In addition to the driving advice, they will offer a a free car maintenance check.
The borough council said that the largest numbers of vehicle breakdowns occur during winter, so people are advised to have their car checked by a mechanic, and should regularly check their car lights, tyres, washer fluid level and wiper blades to make sure they give good visibility.
The Highway Code also advises that people should carry an emergency kit of de-icer, an ice scraper, torch, warm clothing and boots, first aid kit, jump leads and a shovel, together with a warm drink and emergency food in case they get stuck or their vehicle breaks down.
Cllr Malcolm Richards, Wokingham Borough Council’s executive member for highways and transport, said: “This winter driving event is a great opportunity for new, or seasoned drivers, to learn something new about driving in the winter, as well as have their car checked to be safe to drive during the winter.”
As part of the event, drivers will also be reminded to leave a little longer for their journey than normal.
“Bad weather means travelling may be rather slow going, so by giving yourself an extra few minutes, you can avoid getting stressed.
“It is also best to check your route before leaving, to see if there are delays, as well
as listen to traffic reports in case you have to alter your route.”
