A giant daffodil created by Hurst Hookers crochet and knitting group will be a highlight of Hurst’s Easter Trail.
The daffodil, standing 13 ft tall, with its five foot-wide flower, will stand near the village sign in School Road.
The Hookers have made 283 woolly squares in yellow and green. These cover the metal frame made by David Howarth whose wife Heather, is a Hurst Hooker member.
Heather said: “David’s thought of nothing else since the beginning of the year. He’s done a lot of work. The man who taught him welding has been to inspect it.
“The stem goes one metre into the ground to keep it secure. Afterwards the woolly squares can be made into blankets for good causes. We’re putting the daffodil up a week before the trail starts.”
The Easter trail, starting on April 13 with its grand finale on Easter Monday April 21, will cover Hinton and School Roads, Tape and Martineau Lanes and Wards Cross.
Maps showing the trail of Easter-themed displays outside residents’ homes or in their windows will be sold at St Nicholas Primary tomorrow Friday (April 4) and also at cake shop Chaos and Cakes at Whistley Green. A map for each child will cost £2.
On April 21 from 12 noon to 3pm every child who brings their map to Hurst Cricket Club will receive a chocolate egg or bunny. Families doing the trail can take photos as they go along, with prizes afterwards for the funniest and cutest pictures. The maps can also go in a prize draw. There will be a barbecue at the cricket club, with the bar open.
