A READING school marked National Poetry Day with a visit from Poetry World Slam Champion 2012 poet and mathematician Harry Baker.
With this year’s National Poetry Day theme being Counting, the performer’s ability to weave mathematical concepts into his poetry made his visit particularly fitting for the occasion.
The event was organised by both the English and Maths departments.
The interdisciplinary event saw Harry perform his unique blend of creativity and mathematics, inspiring students of St Anne’s School, and enriching their appreciation of both subjects.
The school’s English department has a long tradition of inviting prominent poets to the school, including Patience Agbade, John Agard, Mary-Jean Chan, Carol Ann Duffy and Simon Armitage, all of whom have previously taken their turn to stand on the stage in the school hall.
Harry Baker joined the list of literary guests this month, performing several of his well-loved verses, much to the delight of the Lower School.
After performing poems such as Paper People and Dinosaur Love, he fielded a variety of questions from students, teaching them about his journey into publishing and the events and people that inspired him.
By the end of the morning, students couldn’t help but feel inspired to pick up a pen or perhaps challenge themselves to enter a local poetry slam event.
