Reading FC legend has claimed that Royals midfielder Charlie Savage ‘can’t go to Oxford’ after the Championship side launched a bid to sign him this month.
With the January transfer window still open, the Royals are fighting hard to keep hold of Savage, who has been a key player since arriving from Manchester United in 2023.
Reading’s rivals Oxford have reportedly made two bids for the Welsh international, but the Royals have rejected the advances and are determined to keep hold of the player.
“Speaking to betting site BoyleSports, Kevin Doyle said: “He can’t go to Oxford from Reading. No, that wouldn’t go down well. I saw one of his goals a few weeks ago actually, an absolute worldly he scored for Reading.
“Noel Hunt is a friend of mine, I thought he had done really well with ownership problems and whether they own their stadium or training ground which had been a big worry for the last number of years.
“Thankfully, that seems to be all gone past them now, and they are turning it around. The club is going to be on the up. It’s a fabulous football club.”
Doyle became a legend at the club during his at the club where he spent four years.
Arriving from Cork City in 2005 for around £78,000, he proved to be an absolute bargain as he helped Steve Coppell’s side to win promotion to the Premier League for the first ever time in the clubs history in the iconic ‘106’ team from the 2005/06 season.
He netted 18 goals in the Championship that season as the Royals stormed to the Championship title. He went on to score a total of 56 goals in four seasons with Reading before he departed in 2009 to join Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers.
He continued: “Whether Charlie Savage goes or not, the main thing is that they’ve sorted out their behind-the-scenes issues. It’s a club where the fans and everyone seem happy again.
“The amount of talking and protesting is gone, and now they can focus on getting back to the Premier League. They’ve been there a number of times. Getting back to that, they’re a big club, have a fabulous training ground, and are in a great area.
“They can get back to not talking about off-the-pitch issues, but talking about Reading back in the Premier League. It seemed like it could be a long time, but they have a half a chance now that they’ve got their ownership situations sorted.”
