THUNDERY showers were not enough to deter the people of Wokingham from showing their support for one of the town’s newest animal charities on Bank Holiday Monday.
Hundreds of animal lovers and people simply looking for something fun to do flocked to Embrook Sports and Social Club, in Lowther Road, for the fun day in aid of Saving Abandoned Fly-Grazing Equines (SAFE).
The newly-registered charity, which rescues and rehabilitates horses which have been abandoned across Berkshire, set up dozens of stalls offering fun, games, sweets and knick-knacks for visitors to browse, while children enjoyed pony rides and feeding farm animals.
And a little bit of drizzle could not stop the dog show from going ahead, with dozens of entries from a 19-week-old puppy to a four-year-old Husky strutting their stuff for the judges.
Organiser Vicki Painter said: “Despite the unpredictable weather, we had a constant stream of visitors throughout the day.
“SAFE volunteers brought their family and friends to help run the stalls, games and events, and the local community rallied round to provide last-minute items and help.
“The pony rides and farm animals were very popular, and the Birds of Prey demonstration was fantastic.
“We are still counting the proceeds and donations but expect the total to be over £2500 – which will go straight to our 22 horses and ponies in rehabilitation with us at the moment.”
