Prizewinner, Amelia Lawrence-Perry (7).
Spring arrived on Saturday, March 23, with a wonderful display of daffodils at the WHA Show held at St Paul’s Parish Rooms in Wokingham
The 82 entries in the daffodil classes made a stunning backdrop to the Show, filling the whole back wall of the hall.
Daffodil Society Judge and vice-president Alex Burke commented that the quality and colour range of the daffodils exhibited were excellent across the whole show.
He said: “This time of the year the weather can be quite fickle and a challenge to having flowers available for the show. It was encouraging to see too that the ‘Novice’ classes were well supported.”
He congratulated all who participated.
There was stiff competition in the Domestic Section, with Ann Blakeman’s marmalade winning top prize against 10 other jars.
New exhibitor Alice Baker won first prize with her bunny rabbits digging for carrots on her ‘cup-cakes decorated for Easter’, whilst Jenny Burrows’ ‘coffee cake decorated with walnuts and butter cream’ won her a first prize out of seven entries.

11 month old Charlotte with mum, Georgina Beddington.
Sheila McKeand won the Eve Scott cup for her delicious Simnel cake which was awarded a certificate of merit across the domestic classes.
Nick Hills’ modern twist on Hot Cross Buns gave him joint top prize with Pauline MacBrayne’s traditional recipe.
Young exhibitors excelled with 20 entries of daffodils made from recycled materials.
The class was won by Amelia Lawrence-Perry who won three other first prizes to gain the Southfield Cup.
Imaginations ran wild for more than 20 children who coloured in a countryside scene and this class was won by Poppy.
There was excitement among the children who had planted a ‘mystery bulb’ in the autumn and had watched the flower grow.
Amber’s daffodil bloom was judged the best out of 15.
Both Amber and Poppy are members of the Dolphin School Gardening Club.
The Photography Section was also well supported, and Brian Chinneck won first prize in the class entitled ‘Change’ with photos of his puppy taken 12 months apart at two-and-a-half and 14-and-a-half months…
In the Handicraft Section Jean Potter’s needlework won her two first prizes whilst an intricately designed card from Charlotte Clementson came out top of its class.

Children’s recycled flower entries.
New exhibitor Angela Wade won first prize for her ‘Green with Envy’ in the novice flower arranging section, which also attracted most votes from the visitors.
Town Mayor, Cllr Julian McGhee-Sumner, made a tour of all the exhibits and was pleased to present the awards. He commented on the friendly and convivial atmosphere amongst everyone in the hall and was glad that he had not been judging such close competitions.
WHA is very grateful to Graham Breadmore from the Wokingham Camera Club for taking some lovely photos of both the exhibits and exhibitors, and other visitors to the Show. These can be seen on our website at www.w-h-a.org.uk.
WHA members meet again at the Bradbury Centre, Rose Street at 7.30 for 7.45 on Tuesday, April 9, for an illustrated talk on the Basingstoke Canal by Roger Cansdale.
Visitors will be very welcome, and the cost is £3 to include tea/coffee and a biscuit.
