AROUND 1,000 visitors came to an 80th D-Day Celebration event organised by Crowthorne Parish Council.
At Crowthorne’s Morgan Recreation Ground they were able to enjoy a schools art show, World War II aeroplane models, music from Wildmoor Heath School choir, a treasure hunt, and a fire engine.

Nearly 300 school children in the parish created pictures for a World War II inspired art exhibition displayed on a giant screen.

A flag was raised by councillors, staff, and representatives from Thames Valley Police and Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, to commemorate 80 years since the start of the allied campaign to liberate Europe.
Councillor Bob Wade said “Today we will be paying our respects to all those who fought valiantly and sacrificed their lives for us.”
Crowthorne Parish Council welcomed the Commanding Officer from RMA Sandhurst, and a contingent of 25 Gurkha veterans, who enjoyed the entertainment with their picnics.

A Royal British Legion beer tent, and food stalls kept people refreshed before the film Dunkirk was shown on an outdoor screen.
This was followed by The Vintage Belles with World War II favourites, and a beacon lighting ceremony at the nation’s moment of remembrance at 9.15pm.
