Police have seized and safely disposed of a knife that was found inside an unlocked vehicle in Wokingham town centre.
Officers from the Wokingham South Neighbourhood Policing Team were called to a pub car park on Tuesday after a member of the public reported discovering the knife in an easily accessible car.
Thames Valley Police said no one was harmed and no individual was found to be in possession of the bladed item at the time.
Officers attended the scene and removed the knife to ensure there was no risk to the public.
Police have used the incident to remind residents of the dangers and legal consequences associated with carrying knives in public places.
A spokesperson said that anyone found in possession of a bladed article could face criminal charges, as well as putting themselves and others at risk.
Members of the public are being urged to report any found knives, weapons or bladed items that are accessible and could pose a wider threat.
In an emergency, police advise calling 999. Non-emergency reports can be made by calling 101 or via the Thames Valley Police website.
Knife amnesty bins are also available at local police stations, allowing people to safely dispose of bladed items without fear of prosecution.
Police said the bins are emptied regularly, and between December and January more than 80 bladed articles were handed in at Loddon Valley Police Station alone.
Officers say public vigilance and responsible reporting play a key role in keeping communities safe.
