Sir John Redwood, former member of parliament for Wokingham, has been made a life peer by His Majesty the King and will sit in the House of Lords.
The 74-year-old represented the town as a Conservative from 1987 until standing down in 2024.
Graham Howe, chairman of Wokingham Conservative Association, said: “John Redwood has given 37 years of unstinting service to Wokingham and to the United Kingdom.
“His well recognised intellect has fostered sound economic and business strategy that many would struggle to match.
“We are delighted to see his service rewarded with the elevation to the Lords.
“We thank him for his dedicated service and continued involvement in support of our local communities and country.”
Pauline Jorgensen, leader of the Wokingham Borough Conservative group added:”I am delighted to hear that John has been honoured with a peerage in the recent honours list.
“John has given long and dedicated service to the area since he first became an MP in 1987.
“He has worked incredibly hard over many years and brought his intellect and financial experience to bear on a wide range of subjects both on behalf of residents and councillors.
“I look forward to seeing him put that experience to good effect in the House of Lords, speaking for many in the country.”
John Redwood told Wokingham Today: “I look forward to joining the House of Lords and am grateful for the privilege of becoming a member.
“I will be an active participant, seeking solutions and offering ideas to help with the country’s problems.
“I have learned much over the years from the voters of Wokingham and look forward to hearing from the local community as the Lords seeks to make its contribution to the national debate.”
