WOKINGHAM Borough Council’s five gritters have been officially named following a local schools competition.
The winners met the Volker Highways crews that operate the vehicles, and were able to climb up inside a cab to blow its very loud horn.
Winning entries, with fun new names for the gritters were:
Blizzard of Oz, from Amelie, six, from Floreat Montague Park Primary School
Ctrl Alt De-Ice, a keyboard themed offering given by Jude, eight, a pupil at St Paul’s Junior School
Grittney Spears was named by Henry, six, from Keep Hatch Primary School and by Finley, from Hillside Primary School.
Snowkingham was put forward by Laila, 11, from The Holt School and by Mia, nine from Hawkedon Primary School
And The BFG or Big Friendly Gritter was thought up by Felix, seven, who attends Nine Mile Ride Primary School.
Volker crews are on standby until the end of winter, checking forecasts several times a day and heading out where needed.
They’ve been on several runs so far and have ploughs at the ready in case it snows.
When it snows, residents can expect to see at least one of the gritters clearing the borough’s roads.e.
