Wokingham welcomed the Liberal Democrat spokesperson for business, energy and industrial strategy last week.
The inaugural meeting of the Wokingham Liberal Democrat Business Network saw more than 30 businesses attend the breakfast briefing at the White Horse.
Clive Jones, the Lib Dem candidate for Wokingham at the next general election, spoke about his business career, and welcomed Lord Christoper Fox – saying those present had a “hotline direct to the House of Lords.”
Jones outlined his priorites if he were to be elected.
He said: ”if I was elected, one of my focuses would be improving public services, trying to take them back to where we were not too many years ago.
“When you need a doctor appointment you have one, when you need a policeman because you’ve been burgled, you get a visit from a policeman.”
Lord Fox added: “Our aim as Liberal Democrats will be to work in partnership with businesses, offering stability and opportunities for growth..
Speaking of Jones’ experience in business, and as the former leader of Wokingham Borough Council, he said: “He’s not typical, his background isn’t typical, his experience isn’t typical, and his knowledge isn’t typical.
“That’s what we need. People who can bring to the House of Commons different experiences and different strengths.”
“We have to work in partnership with businesses to maximise the opportunities and understand where the opportunities lie, and then actually try to get out of the way.”
The event was sponsored by Mark Ashwell, director of Trademark Windows and chair of the Wokingham Liberal Democrat Business Network.
