MARCUS WILLIS is just one win away from returning to the Wimbledon singles main draw.
The former Wokingham schoolboy, now 26, saw off fellow Brit Liam Broady in three sets yesterday at Roehampton to book his spot in the final round of qualifying.
His run to the second round and a showdown with Roger Federer last year earned ‘Willbomb’ a wildcard entry into this year’s qualifying event.
Ranked 374 in the world, Willis produced a shock to dispatch of Slovakian Andrej Martin, ranked 148, in straight sets 7-5, 7-5 on Monday.
That set up the clash with Stockport’s Broady and after a gruelling contest, Willis prevailed 7-6, 6-7, 6-2.
Weather permitting, Willis will now face Ukraine’s Illya Marchenko, world number 117, later today for a spot at Wimbledon.
Even if Willis is unsuccessful, he will be at SW19 after being handed a wildcard into the doubles draw alongside youngster Jay Clarke, who is also into the final round of singles qualifying.
